Musiq Soulchild Newark Concert reviews
Chaka the Great
Here is the rearranged version with some words switched:
"I had never seen her in concert before, despite being a huge fan and having all of her albums. This concert was quite a treat for me because she shared with the audience regularly - some things that maybe other artists would not have shared. There were only 4 tunes that I really wanted to hear Musiq Soulchild perform. Through the Fire, Angel, Ain't Nobody, and I Want. She did two of the three, so I was happy.
The show had a distinctly sensual vibe, Musiq Soulchild has shed some pounds and did not shy away from flaunting the new figure. (Not that she looked bad with the extra weight. She is one of those fortunate individuals who become more curvaceous as they gain weight.) The crowd made sure to express loud appreciation for the new slender physique she flaunted. But even this came with a hint of self-deprecation - or perhaps not. She turned away from the audience and acknowledged the genetic fact - that no matter what happens, "that ain't going anywhere!" Her backside will remain regardless of how much weight she loses.
The sound guy urgently needed to pull himself together!! Missed cues on microphones that should have been activated, excessive "thump" from the bass drum, Zero amplification on the guitarists' solos. Eh, that's how it goes. Speaking of which, that guitarist has some serious vocal skills!! The man can sing! I was thoroughly amazed.
I appreciate the concept of musicians revealing what they were feeling, going through, thinking, pondering when they penned a particular song. Musiq Soulchild took this a step further by sharing in a down-to-earth, authentic manner that was both moving and humorous. She performed for an hour and a half with no encore. I suspect that there was either an issue with her voice or she had other commitments that prevented a two-hour performance.
As I heard repeatedly that evening - MUSIQ SOULCHILD, WE LOVE YOU!!!"
